{"id":4317,"date":"2021-08-09T13:36:51","date_gmt":"2021-08-09T11:36:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wijnants.info\/fmdx\/?p=4317"},"modified":"2021-08-11T09:37:14","modified_gmt":"2021-08-11T07:37:14","slug":"august-9-2021-using-ubuntu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wijnants.info\/fmdx\/august-9-2021-using-ubuntu\/","title":{"rendered":"August 9 2021 &#8211; Using Ubuntu"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<a href=\"http:\/\/wijnants.info\/fmdx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Ubuntu04.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" alt=\"Ubuntu and QT-DAB\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/wijnants.info\/fmdx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Ubuntu04-800x417.jpg\" alt=\"Ubuntu and QT-DAB\" width=\"444\" height=\"244\"><\/a>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After having dabbled in Linux years ago, I decided it was time again to find out how to use Linux in FMDAB DX, with my hardware (RSP1A, RTL-SDR and AirspyR2).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I chose <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/ubuntu.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ubuntu<\/a> in a virtual machine (<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.virtualbox.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Virtual Box<\/a>) and have a go at the Linux adventure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:25px\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">DAB<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Welle.io<\/strong><br>Easiest to install was <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.welle.io\/\" target=\"_blank\">Welle.io<\/a> as it can also be found in the Ubuntu Software package in your Ubuntu install. Just follow the instructions on your screen. Welle.io does a great job with Airspy and RTL-SDR, actually even better than on Windows 10 for that matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<a href=\"http:\/\/wijnants.info\/fmdx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Ubuntu02.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" alt=\"Welle.io on Ubuntu\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/wijnants.info\/fmdx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Ubuntu02-800x500.jpg\" alt=\"Welle.io on Ubuntu\" width=\"444\" height=\"244\"><\/a>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>QT-DAB-4.0.<\/strong><br>Developer Jan Van Katwijk is an avid Linux user and software developer who is not much into Windows.<br>QT-DAB works wonderfully well in Linux with no audio drops on strong muxes as sometimes happened with <br>Windows 10. <br>QT-DAB is great with AirspyR2, RSP1A (Jan&#8217;s favourite) and RTL-SDR. <br>Jan strongly advises to download and install the necessary Linux API from SDRPlay first. <br>Then run these commands in the Terminal:<br><em>git clone git:\/\/ git.osmocom.org\/rtl-sdr.git<\/em><br><em>cd rtl-sdr\/<br>mkdir build<br>cd build<br>cmake ..\/ -DINSTALL_UDEV_RULES=ON -DDETACH_KERNEL_DRIVER=ON<br>make<br>sudo make install<br>sudo ldconfig<br>cd ..<br>rm -rf build<br>cd ..<\/em><br>QT-DAB works excellently with RSP1A and AirspyR2. Its performance is a bit less with the RTL-SDR dongle.<br>Performance wise I feel QT doing better with Linux than Windows, but admittedly this is more a &#8216;watch and feel&#8217; thingy.<br>I do prefer the QT Linux GUI though; it&#8217;s just smoother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<a href=\"http:\/\/wijnants.info\/fmdx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Ubuntu01.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" alt=\"QT-DAB-4.0 on Ubuntu\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/wijnants.info\/fmdx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Ubuntu01-800x566.jpg\" alt=\"QT-DAB-4.0 on Ubuntu\" width=\"444\" height=\"244\"><\/a>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>QIRX?<\/strong><br>Clem Schmidt developed a Linux version (1.0.0.4) of the superb QIRX, but it&#8217;s outdated now as Clem concentrates on developing QIRX for Windows. <br>I haven&#8217;t installed this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:25px\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">FM<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My favourite software for FM is the excellent <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sdr-radio.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">SDR-Console<\/a> developed by Simon Brown. Simon has made some great improvements on RDS decoding in 2021. <br>SDRC now performs as well as <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/airspy.com\/download\/\" target=\"_blank\">SDR##<\/a> with <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/rdsspy.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">RDSSpy<\/a>.<br>Simon is NOT into Linux and there won&#8217;t be a Linux version any time soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Gqrx<\/strong><br><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/gqrx.dk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Gqrx<\/a> is for Linux and its development seems to have stopped in 2018. It can easily be found in the Linux software repositories. It works well with the RTL-SDR dongles.<\/p>\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wijnants.info\/fmdx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Ubuntu03.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/wijnants.info\/fmdx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Ubuntu03-800x453.jpg\" alt=\"Gqrx\" width=\"444\" height=\"244\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n<p><strong>SDR++<\/strong><br>New <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rtl-sdr.com\/sdr-version-1-0-0-released\/\" target=\"_blank\">SDR++<\/a> should work well on Linux and I got it running, but after updating to a newer version I cannot get it working any longer.
